The Key-ver beach house is an oceanfront vacation rental in the world-famous Florida Keys on the southern end of Summerland Key, mile marker 25. The house is an open floor plan with panoramic Atlantic Ocean views and a large wrap-around deck. Two bedrooms (the oceanside bedroom has a king bed and the palm room a queen), a comfortable pull-out queen-size couch, and 2 full baths. There is a fully equipped kitchen, a 75" TV in the living room, and a 55" TV in the ocean bedroom. But the view is what you'll be looking at; an ever-changing ocean view from every room! We have had several guests who have worked during their vacation, our internet is fiber/wifi. The washer & dryer are on the lower level as is a gas grill for your BBQs. We'll have 2 kayaks and 2 bicycles at the house in case you want to explore around and on the island like a local.

You'll find the best of both worlds: an oceanfront private sand beach and protected canal dockage for up to a 36' boat (water, electric & fish cleaning station at the dock) with instant access to open water. The Key-ver beach house offers a home base for fishing, diving, and adventures by sea, quick trips to Key West for tours, shopping, or happy hour, and a quiet place to kick back and enjoy island life with a spectacular view. The night sky is stellar too.

We are a member of the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce and have affiliation with Summerland Cove private airport (FD51). Our Key-ver beach house is registered as a vacation rental with Monroe County Florida.

The house is available for rent from May 1 through October 31, 2023. Per county municipal code there is a 27-night/28-day minimum stay requirement.

Unique Benefits

The property has its own private beach and beach bottom out to the end of the rock jetty (refer to the aerial picture). It is a great base for a boater. If you prefer to stay on land, there is an ever-changing view of the horizon to the ocean from almost every room of the house. We had a couple of guests who are cyclists, who used our house as their base. Whether you are a bird watcher or not, you will enjoy the various shorebirds that frequent the beach, hunt over the ocean, and fly by at eye level. Star gazing is spectacular too. No need to get out of bed to see the sunrise, just lift your head off the pillow. Sunsets are beautiful too in the south sky afterglow. Or walk around the block to Sunset Drive, just past Sydney Sweeney's for a great sunset view. Our house is a great place to stay and chill, from which to work, or come back to rest, after an excursion.

Why Kids Love It

Our children, now adults grew up with the ocean in their back yard. A great experience for everyone.

The Key-ver beach house is a great place for families to put down their electronic devices and explore and bond through unique outdoor experiences. Whether you spot a pod of dolphin through the windows of the house, a hermit crab or other sea creatures at the beach or on a kayak ride or bicycle and spot a white crown pigeon (the keys are its northernmost territory), or watch an osprey bring a fish back to its nest, you will have quality family time. There are plenty of shooting stars at night (we call them shooters)!

Sea Camp on Big Pine Key offers opportunities for children to learn marine biology and so much more. Google Sea Camp as there is pre-registration and if it is still like when my children went, a teacher's recommendation may be required.

Area Information

Summerland Key (mm 25) is midway between Key West (mm 0) and the Seven Mile Bridge. The Key-ver beach house is 1 1/2 miles from the 'Overseas Highway' (US-1) on the quiet southern tip of Summerland. This property offers a rare opportunity to enjoy an ocean beach and protected canal dockage, both just steps from your door. Situated on deep water Niles Channel, boaters have instant access to the open ocean, Looe Key Marine Sanctuary, famous backcountry flats fishing, the Gulf of Mexico, and more. Summerland Key is also home to the Summerland Key Cove Airport (FD51), a private airport community. If you are a pilot and want to fly in, we will put you in contact with the airport. Whether by land, sea, or air, experience island life at its finest at the Key-ver beach house!

Whether you bring your boat, take an excursion or ecotour, bicycle, or just want to chill, this is an ideal location to do whatever it is you like to do on your vacation.

Attractions Within Walking Distance

Sunset is a block away or a kayak ride around the end of the island. Sunrise is at the beach house. The private beach and ocean are steps away from the house, as is the protected canal for your boat.

There are restaurants a couple of miles away and the Overseas Heritage bicycle path runs parallel to the overseas highway (US 1).

The house is 25 miles from Key West and Marathon and 5 miles from Big Pine Key shopping.

Favorite Places To Eat

At home, after a good day of fishing, fresh fish is the best.

Boondocks, KiKi's Sand Bar, Square Grouper...we have a book of suggestions at the house for our guests.

Inside Scoop

We have a "fun book" including inside scoop, the history of Summerland Key, Key West, and some of the famous people who lived and still live here. We also have a small library of local artists and quick reads about Little Palm Island, Henry Flagler, and more, inside scoop in the beach house.

Other Vacation Rental Amenities

Some people visit the Florida Keys and never leave the land. That's ok, but there is so much more!

Here are some examples close to the house:

Little Palm Island, a world-class spa and resort is in view off to the southeast from the Key-ver beach house. For a fantasy island experience, it is open to the public for lunch (reservations are a must).

On the ocean side of Little Palm Island (about a 1-mile boat ride), there is a protected patch reef.

Looe Key, part of the Florida reef tract, is part of the only living barrier reef in the continental United States. It is a marine sanctuary accessible by a 6-mile boat ride due east. If you don't have a boat, dive shops run daily snorkel and dive trips to Looe Key, if you bring your own boat, it is an easy trip from the Key-ver beach house.

From our house with binoculars on a nice day, you may see what looks like a city or flotilla to the left of Little Palm Island. That is Picnic Island, a small island with a party atmosphere on the island and its sandbar.

Fishing, diving, snorkeling, spearfishing and discovering await those who enjoy salt life.

Tonio's Seafood Shack & Kiki's Tiki Bar, are a short car ride just across U.S. 1 or you can boat over and dock at these restaurants. Tonio's is on Summerland, Kiki's Sandbar and Grill is on Little Torch.

About the host

: Bud and Grace have been married for almost 40 years. We share the love of the ocean, environment, and watersports with each other, our 3 adult children, and their families. We are scuba divers and avid boaters, and Bud and our son are pilots. Our favorite vacation destination was the Lower Keys until we moved to Summerland, 25 years ago. We specifically love Summerland Key, its open space, the neighborhood, and direct access to blue water so much that in 2013, we established the Key-ver beach house. The name 'Key-ver' is a play on our last name and is pronounced the same way. Whether by land, sea, or air, there are plenty of fun and unique excursions in the lower keys and the Key-ver beach house is a great home base. We look forward to sharing this vacation destination and the beauty of the southern end of Summerland Key with you. We live across the canal from the Key-ver beach house and are available if you need anything during your stay. By the way, if you are a pilot and want to bring a plane, we will connect you with FD51, a private airport on Summerland Key.

Why this property?

Location, location, location for a great vacation! Our oceanfront beach house is one of the very few homes that have an oceanfront beach and protected canal dockage with instant access to open water. The southern end of Summerland is a special place; its open space is filled with palm trees, tropical gardens, native plants, birds, and other wildlife that share the island with those fortunate enough to find and take the time to enjoy it. We hope that you will enjoy our beach house on Summerland Key and experience island living and all that the lower keys have to offer. The Key-ver beach house has served boaters, fishermen, divers, enthusiastic bicyclers, and many people who just want to explore the keys. It is a great house in a very special location to do all that and more.

The views are truly where the sky meets the sea. The ocean view from the house is spectacular. The pictures do not do the ever-changing panoramic view justice. You will have to see it and enjoy it for yourself. Very few homes have oceanfront and protected canal access as this one does. Windy days bring out kiteboarders to Pye Key flats for your entertainment and dolphins swim by, near shore. The neighborhood is quiet, located a mile and a half from the overseas highway, off the beaten trail. Summerland Key is close enough to Key West to make daily or nightly trips, yet far enough away to enjoy the island breeze, watch the ever-changing ocean, and have a stellar view of the night sky. Please read the reviews of guests who watched dolphins and other wildlife from the comfort of our Key-ver beach house.

Guestbook comments from the host:

Key-ver House an unspoiled slice of Eden
5/5 Stayed Aug 2014
I am an art critic with the Village Voice Media’s Miami New Times and my girlfriend is an attorney who were eager to plan a vacation away from the hectic pace and vagaries of life in Miami. At the Key-ver House on Summerland Key we discovered an unspoiled slice of Eden with an abundance of natural wildlife, soul-enriching serenity, and spectacular fishing. Let’s begin by saying that the owners’ Bud and Grace were both generous and hospitable taking the time to orient us about the surrounding area and all the activities available to visitors. The house itself was spacious, with a private beach, and boasted panoramic windows overlooking the ocean that doubled as one’s personal theatrical stage featuring stunning sunrises and frolicking pods of porpoises and the occasional sea tortoise. The house comes well-appointed with every conceivable home amenity, including a gourmet-friendly kitchen, cooking hardware, and appliances. The bedrooms are comfortable and all the rooms are decorated in understated tropical, Keys fashion. Located between Marathon and Key West---a short 25-minute drive in either direction—Key-ver House is close to some of the finest restaurants in the region and just minutes away from Bahia Honda recognized as one of the top ten beaches in America. The house also comes with a pair of kayaks and bikes to make exploring the area an adventure. We love fishing. So when Bud offered us his nautical maps and shared tips on nearby snapper honey holes to dip our lines in we were enthusiastic. Let’s just say that a short kayak ride from the backyard to the nearby Crab Key provided us with our daily limit of twenty snappers each time we visited. The ridiculously gorgeous spot made for some great meals not to mention fish stories that have left friends and relatives green with envy. Not only did Bud and Grace make us feel at home upon arriving, but the house itself was homey and comfortable in every way imaginable. Before we forget, we have to mention that the Key-ver House is pet friendly and our three girls—a teacup poodle, a dachshund, and a Chihuahua had the best time of their lives there, romping in the surf, sniffing out crabs in their holes and chasing iguanas. The place is even fronted by a private canal to park your boat and houses some of the fattest snappers we bagged during our vacation. I can’t think of a better place to relax & unwind, uplift your spirit or communicate with nature.

Excellent Location - Excellent Hosts

Fantastic location, the view from the sunroom is fantastic. Postcard sunrises to start the day! House was very well equipted with everything we needed during our stay, hosts reached out to check on us and were great to offer suggestions on activities in the area. We loved being able to keep our boat in the canal directly behind the house, super easy access to open water. Trailer parking on site was another big plus. Would highly recommend Key-ver House to anyone looking for a great experiance in the Lower Keys.

Perfect lower keys getaway

Kiever beach house was the perfect getaway for my family. Being located right on the water provided a great view that was entertaining and relaxing. The house is well taken care of. It felt very clean and comfortable. It was convenient to have our boat directly across the street from the house as well as space to park our trailer in the driveway. House was stocked with everything we needed and more. It was nice to have the ice machine to fill coolers on our boating days. The owner lives close by and was very accommodating and helpful with making sure we knew where everything was and how things worked around the house. We look forward to staying again!
